Surzur, en breton Surzhur, est attesté en 1220 sous la forme Surzur - comme la forme actuelle et que nosu retrouverons en 1387 et 1453. L'année 1304 nous présentera un Sirzur alors que l'année 1558 nous laissera lire un Sursu puis un Surzu en 1630.

Ce toponyme reste totalement énigmatique et aucune hypothèse n'apporte clef fiable et correctement acceptable. Pour certains ,ce toponyme serait dérivé d'un anthroponyme latin, Artorius, mais cela n'est pas évidence.
