⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Le bourg et paroisse de Saint-Jean-Brévelay, en breton Sant-Yann-Breleve et Sènt Jen pour le gallo, est attesté en 1392 dans les archives de l'abbaye de la Joie d'Hennebont ; la paroisse est signalée sous la forme Saint-Jean. Nous retrouverons le bourg cité dans les archives du chapitre de Vannes en 1461 sous la forme de Saint Jehan puis dans les archives du château de Callac par un Saint Jehan Brevellay en 1543 alors que l'année 1630 nous laissera voir un S. Iean de Breuelec.

La commune et paroisse sont placées sous la protection de Jean de Beverley - John of Beverley connu aussi sous le nom de John d'York et est fêté le 7 mai. Jean de Beverley était évêque anglais du Royaume de Northumbrie à Hexham puis York. Il est le fondateur de la ville de Beverley et sera canonisé en l'an 1037 ; c'est aussi un saint de l'Église orthodoxe.
