C'est en 1237 qu'est retrouvée la première attestation toponymique ancienne pour Baratier - idem en vivaro-alpin ; nous le lisons sous la forme latine Baraterium dans le livre des copies d'Embrun. Dans ces mêmes archives, nous retrouverons ce toponyme sous forme identique en 1314, 1346 et, pour les archives du Chapitre de Gap, en 1434. Le pouillé d'Embrun nous délivre un Mandamentum Baraterii en 1443 et un Baratier en 1568.

Ernest Nègre donne la définition de fraudeur, fripon pour Baratier. Si ce mot a cette définition en occitan, il nous semble difficile d'y voir un toponyme. Faire dériver ce toponyme de celui de la famille Bayle, Sieur de Baratier, est une aussi fausse hypothèse: les Bayle, comme toutes familles de la noblesse, ne donnèrent pas leur nom à un terroir mais prirent celui de leur seigneurie.

Ce toponyme nous est abscons.
