⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

La commune de Saint-Martin-sur-Oust, en breton Sant-Varzhin-an-Oud et Sènt-Martin en langue gallèse, est placée sous la protection du saint éponyme. Martin de Tours, alias Martin le Miséricordieux, est un saint majeur de l'Église. Évêque de Tours, son hagiographie fut écrite en 396-397 par Sulpice-Sévère, un de ses disciples. Né en Pannonie, en l'an 316, Saint-Martin est surtout connu pour avoir partagé sa chlamyde avec un pauvre hère transis de froid.

Saint-Martin-sur-Oust est ancienne trêve et démembrement de la paroisse primitive de Glénac et devient commune en 1790 et paroisse en 1802. Nous ne connaissons qu'une forme ancienne pour ce toponyme signalé en 1330 dans le Cartulaire de l'Abbaye Saint-Sauveur de Redon avec un Sanctus Martinus.
