Cournon, en breton Kornon, est une commune liée au monastère qui lui a donné son nom et est mentionné dans le Cartulaire de Redon en l'an 870 sous la forme Cornou. Les années nous laissent voir toujours graphie identique pour ce toponyme avec un Cornon que nous retrouvons en 1387, 1427 1513, 1513, 1536, 1779.

Sous réserves, nous pourrions rapprocher ce toponyme du breton Korn = coin ; peut-être allusion à la position d'un village originel situé près d'une boucle de l'Aff, ou à la confluence de l'Aff et du ruisseau des landes du loup ?
La question reste posée.

Il existe aussi une commune de Cournon en Auvergne.
