Turriers, en vivaro-alpin Turriès, se retrouve dans le cartulaire du monastère de Saint Victor de Marseille en 1183: Pierre, archevêque d'Embrun confirme la sentence prononcée dans un différent opposant Guillaume de Turriers et le monastère de Gigors.

Turriers, alors sous sa forme latine Turriis, doit son toponyme à l'escarpement sur lequel était construit une tour dont il ne reste plus que les fondations ; ce toponyme semble être préceltique.
