Glénac, en breton Glenneg, proviendrait du breton Glann qui, en breton vannetais, signifie toujours rive. La canalisation de l'Oust a profondément modifié la morphologie des lieux, supprimé les divagations de cet affluent de la Vilaine et la superficie marécageuse. Néanmoins, les marais proches - dont celui du Mortier - sur la confluence de l'Aff et de l'Oust confortent cette hypothèse.

Glénac est attesté dns les archives du Chapitre de Vannes en 1330 sous la forme Glannac ; forme que l'on retrouvera identique en 1387 en parallèle avec la forme Glennac.
