L'immense majorité des toponymes de Camors datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Comme pour beaucoup de toponymes, plusieurs hypothèses sont ici possibles.

Pour la légende Kamorzh, Camors en français, découlerait du nom de Comorre, roi sanguinaire - mais pas plus que les autres - au VI° siècle. Certains, avec ironie, voudraient faire découler Camors - Kamorzh de Moc'h, pemoc'h - le cochon à cause des sangliers peuplant la forêt domaniale. Plus probable est un dérivé du latin Campus Mori, via le breton, et signifiant Camp des Maures. En breton contemporain, Kamp, ur C'hamp, substantif masculin, signifie toujours le camp et Morian, ar Vorianed traduit les africains, les noirs, les hommes à la peau sombre.

Sans doute, étant d'origine nord-africaine ou de peaux noires et sombres, un détachement de troupes de l'Empire Romain ayant séjourné sur ce territoire ou bâti un camp dont il ne reste trace, aurait généré cette appellation.

Plusieurs formes anciennes émaillent les siècles dont la première connue se découvre dans les archives du duché de Rohan-Chabot en 1204 avec un Camor que nous voyons aussi en 1228 et 1250 avec un Kemorz. Le Chapitre de Vannes nous informe aussi avec son Camorz de 1387 qui sera à l'identique dans les archives de l'Abbaye de Lanvaux en 1439. C'est en 1464 que nous découvrirons le premier et actuel Camors.
