■ Baltiysk: Toponymes

Les toponymes actuels du District urbain de Baltiisk, en russe Балтийский городской округ, furent décrétés en 1947 par décret du Présidium du Soviet Suprême de l'URSS. Il est aisé de comprendre ces toponymes tous d'origine slave et liés aux idéaux de l'immédiate après-guerre dans un pays ayant vu ses populations exterminées par les allemands.

Après sa prise de pouvoir, le gouvernement allemand - nazi, réforma toute la toponymie des lieux pour imposer des toponymes germaniques et éliminer la toponymie de type prussienne ou à connotation non germanique.

La colonisation de ce territoire par les allemands, fit disparaître la toponymie borusse - aussi appelée pruthène ou prussienne ; les peuples prussiens étaient slaves.

Baltiysk: Années 1920: pêcheurs de Narmel

⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

La plus ancienne mention du site qui nous soit connue dans les chroniques historiques indique un Wohgram édifié par des colons germaniques en 1258 et dont nous n'avons retrouvé racines si ce n'est qu'il est lié à la forêt éponyme partagée entre les Chevaliers Teutoniques et l'Évêque de Samland ; cinq villages occupaient alors le site actuel.

C'est en 1363 que sera fondé Pill dont le toponyme dérive du vieux-prussien signifiant montagne, château, fort, et qui sera germanisé en Pillau ; l'isthme était non coupé en ce lieu. Une tempête, le 10 septembre 1510, perçant le tombolo, coupera la ville en Vieux Pillau et Nouveau Pillau. Pillau restant toponyme jusqu'en 1946 avec la réforme toponymique soviétique qui baptisera la ville Балтийск - Baltiysk en raison de son lien avec la Mer Baltique.
