L'immense majorité des toponymes de Arvieux datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Arvieux, Arvieus en vivaro-alpin, semble, pour certains, provenir d'un radical méditérranéen signifiant eau courante, torrent. Cette explication nous est légère: vu le nombre de torrents, ce lieu est celui que vous souhaitez !

Nous pencherions plutôt pour un toponyme dérivant du mot latin Arva = champ labouré qui, au pluriel, donne arvæ = champs labourés ; notre toponyme caractérisant alors probablement très bien ce lieu, remarquable en cette vallée et monde alpin de l'époque.

Arvieux apparaît pour la première fois connue dans les écrits sous le toponyme d'Arveolum dès 1311, 1320 et 1371 ; ceci dans les archives du Briançonnais. L'Inventaire Dauphinois nous laissera lire un Arveleum en 1348. Les minutes notariales et les archives archiépiscopales d'Embrun nous permettent de découvrir un Arveolum en 1406 et 1495. C'est le Pouillé d'Embrun qui nous fera voir le premier toponyme sous sa forme actuelle - Arvieux, en 1568 ; toponyme perdant son X pour devenir Arvieu en 1792 dans l'État des paroisses de l'Évêché de Gap et d'Embrun.
