Le Sulnieg breton est devenu Sulniac en français. Attesté dès 1160 dans les Preuves de Dom Morice, Sulniac est alors écrit Suluniac, hospitale, écriture sous laquelle apparaît encore Sulunyac en 1387 dans les archives du chapitre de Vannes. L'année 1266 nous avait dévoilé un Suluiniach puis un Suillinizac et Sulnuyac en 1387 dans les archives du duché de Rohan-Chabot. L'année 1401 offira un Sulliniac puis Sulleniac en 1407. citons aussi Sullunyac en 1415, Susniac en 1423, Sulnigniac et Sulnyac en 1453, Suliniac en 1516, Suligna en 1608 et Suliac en 1630.

Il semble que Sulniac dérive de Sul, dont le sens est obscur ou d'un anthroponyme Solemnius ; aucune de ces deux pistes ne faisant l'unanimité.
