⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Смирных - Smirnykh était connu sous le nom de 気屯 - Keton pendant l'occupation japonaise de 1905 à 1945. Minuscule village japonais, il était doublé d'un village de travailleurs coréens dont le nom - s'il a existé, ne nous est parvenu.

Retrouvant suzeraineté sur l'île, l'URSS rebaptisa les différents lieux de Sakhaline et, le 15 octobre 1947, par décret du Présidium du Soviet suprême de la RSFSR, le village fut rebaptisé Smirnykh en mémoire du Héros de l'Union soviétique Léonid Vladimirovitch Smirnykh, décédé en 1945.

Commandant de bataillon, 179° régiment de fusiliers, 79° division de fusiliers, 16° Armée, 2° front d'Extrême-Orient, le capitaine Smirnykh se distingua lors des combats pour la libération du sud de Sakhaline. Son bataillon perça les lignes ennemies fortifiées et, poursuivant les japonais, s'empara de cinq casemates. Léonid Vladimirovitch Smirnykh fut tué au combat le 16 août 1945.
