⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Ploeren, en breton Ploveren, est attesté en l'an 1387 sous la forme Plœrren dans les archives du Chapitre de Vannes. En 1402, les archives du Duché de Rohan-Chabot nous offrent un Plœueren que nous retrouvons en 1453 avec un premier Ploeren contemporain. Plusieurs formes anciennes de ce toponyme sont lisibles dans les archives et documents parvenus jusqu'à nous. Signalons le Ploteren de 1516, le Plomeren de 1554, le Ploerin de 1779 que nous reverrons en Pleren en 1815 et Ploeren en 1851.

Ce toponyme ne pose problème et dérive du mot Plou désignant une paroisse primitive créée lors de l'installation des Bretons en Armorique et provenant du mot latin Pleb, peuple. La seconde partie du toponyme est un anthroponyme, peut-être religieux ou, aussi possible, un machtiern, chef breton, ayant donné nom à ce territoire.
