Neuvilly-en-Argonne est signalé dans une bulle de Léon IX sous la forme Neuvilleniacum. Le cartulaire de la cathédrale de Verdun le fait découvrir sous la forme Nivillei en 1049 et 1226, puis en Nivilliacum en 1127 et 1230. Nous pourrions rapprocher de toponyme de Nivillac en Bretagne et rappellerait ces grands défrichements du Moyen-Âge et apparition de nouveaux villages et bourgs.

Argonne a été rajouté pour différencier la commune ds autres Neuvilly français.

    Au XIII° siècle, ce cha^teau était connu sous le nom d'Habencurt, qui perdra son H dans la citation de 1656 pour devenir cet Aboncourt actuel. Ce toponyme dérive de l'anthroponyme germanique Abon et Curtis désignant une ferme, un domaine rural germanique ; peut-être, le fondateur étant un de ces germains ayant servit l'Empire Romain et s'étant vu alloué des terres après sa période.
