L'immense majorité des toponymes de Khovsgol aïmag datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

L'aïmag porte le nom du lac éponyme, le Хөвсгөл - Lac du Khovsgol que, pour être précis, nous devrions simplement appeler Lac de Khovs ; Гөл - Gol = Lac.

N'ayant retrouvé de formes anciennes à la Bibliothèque Nationale sauf un Хөв Суу Гол - Rœv Sou Gol = profond-eau-lac, que, pour employer un français correct, nous traduirons par Lac aux eaux profondes. Il est a remarquer que Нуур - Noure est le mot mongol contemporain désignant un lac et Гол - Gol utilisé pour désigner une rivière. L'emploi de Гол - Gol = Lac étant propre aux Tsataans.

La profondeur du lac, pendant du Baïkal et allant jusqu'à 267 mètres de profondeur pour une profondeur moyenne de 138 mètres, corrobore ce toponyme.
