Habitée dès le néolithique, l'île de Sein est déjà signalée en 43 par le géographe romain Pomponius Mela.

Il cite l'île en ces termes:

L'île de Sena, située dans la mer Britannique, en face des Osismiciens, est renommée par un oracle gaulois, dont les prêtresses, vouées à une virginité perpétuelle, sont au nombre de neuf. Elles sont appelées Gallicènes, et on leur attribue le pouvoir singulier de déchaîner les vents et de soulever les mers, de se métamorphoser en tels animaux que bon leur semble, de guérir des maux partout ailleurs regardés comme incurables, de connaître et de prédire l'avenir, faveurs qu'elles n'accordent néanmoins qu'à ceux qui viennent tout exprès dans leur île pour les consulter.

⤇ De siècles en siècles, de Sénan en Sénan, certaines pratiques druidiques ont perduré dans l'île sous une forme christianisée. Dom Mikael de Nobletz, d'après le Père Saint André, son biographe, note pendant sa mission de 1613 que les Sénans, lors de la nouvelle lune, s'agenouillent devant elle et récitent une oraison dominicale. Il signale aussi l'existence de trois femmes y enseignant un culte ou le soleil est Dieu-Père - an Doue Tad.

Bien qu'il ne subsiste aucune trace de cette période, l'île fut sûrement habitée pendant la période gallo-romaine.

◎ La seconde guerre mondiale

L'Île de Sein, c'est le quart de la France s'exclama le Général de Gaulle en inspectant les premiers volontaires français arrivés en Angleterre après l'appel du 18 juin 1940.
