Le centre administratif communal de Céreste se situe dans la mairie de la division administrative commune.

Nous pensons souvent et faussement que les maires sont nés de la grande et sanglante Révolution de 1789. Fausse croyance car il existait des maires bien avant cette révolution et nous en trouvons grand nombre sous l'Ancien Régime. Longtemps, les maires furent nommés par le Roi. C'est avec la république qu'ils furent élus à un suffrage qui ne fut pas toujours universel.

Les mots Maire et Mairie dérivent du latin Major. D'usage attesté dès l'époque mérovingienne - du V° au VIII° siècle, les maires - majors, sont alors des intendants chargés de gérer un domaine rural et les équipes de serfs. Son sens s'élargissant, le maire deviendra premier magistrat dans les villes s'émancipant des domaines seigneuriaux pour, avec les ans, devenir le premier magistrat de nos communes.
