Nous ne connaissons que l'année de naissance et de décès de ce natif de Cerdon. Longtemps oublié, et qualifié d'auteur de poésies bonnes pour le temps en 1895, Abraham de Vermeil écrira plus d'une centaine de poèmes en vers édités en 1600, 1603, 607 et 1611. Sa création la plus importante a été perdue ; il s'agissait d'une vie de Saint Louis en vers en 24 volumes. Anobli en 1593 par Charles-Emmanuel de Savoie, son protecteur, il est un des représentants de la noblesse du Bugey au Parlement.

Il participa au Parnasse satyrique du sieur Théophile, recueil de vers libertins édité sous le manteau en 1622. C'est aussi lui qui inventa le Muzain, poème composé d'un quatrain et d'un quintil.

Jean-Baptiste Goiffon, trop peu connu, est un grand parmi les médecins. Après des études médicales à Montpellier, il se fera remarquer par ses compétences médicales, sauvant le marquis de Rougement, soignant la Reine d'Espagne atteinte de tuberculose, et multiples autres patients. Passionné de botanique, il écrit plusieurs flores. Installé à Lyon, place Bellecour, voyant la peste à Marseille, pressentant - c'est révolutionnaire - que la peste naît de virus encore invisibles aux microscopes, il préface en 1721 le Observations faites sur la peste qui règne à présent à Marseille et dans la Provence de Bertrand et Michel, médecin à Marseille. Préconisant confinements et règles strictes, Lyon souffre peu de la Peste de 1720-1723. Il meurt abandonné à Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon

Joseph Goiffon, enfant de Cerdon et religieux, fut astronome, principal du collège de Thoissey et aumonier du duc du Maine. Nous lui devons un Harmonie des deux sphères céleste et terrestre, ou l'Art de connaître la situation, la route, et la distance de toutes les parties de la terre par le soleil et par les étoiles édité en 1739. En 1738, il fit paraître un Heureuse situation des astres à la naissance de Mgr le Dauphin, arrivée au château de Versailles, le 4 septembre 1729 ainsi que plusieurs autres ouvrages scientifiques qui seront rapidement traduits de leur latin natif vers le français.
