Beuil, en provençal Buelh, est attesté sous la forme latine Castrum Boliacum que nous retrouvons plus tard sous les formes Ambolicenses, Bolium, Boliaco, Bolio. Cet ancien fief des Grimaldi fut lieu de passage et de relais des voyageurs romains puis gallo-romain montant ou descendant de Cimiez; la situation, aux portes des gorges du Cians, explique cet intérêt.

L'appellation Ambolicences est intéressante et permet de rapprocher ce toponyme du mot celte Ambo: gué, lieu de passage sur une rivière ; aussi retrouvé en Bretagne avec Ambon, en Morbihan.
