L'immense majorité des toponymes de Azov datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Ils sont aussi légions à avoir été créés lors des grands défrichements qui ont fait naître nos paysages, nos hameaux, nos villages et communes actuelles. Images de l'Histoire, de ses hommes et de leurs langues, plusieurs strates linguistiques y sont visibles.

Dès le I° siècle, Pline, énumérant les tribus scythes connues, nous signale la tribu des Asoki, ce qui nous rapprocherait du toponyme actuel. Azov a donné son nom à la mer toute proche ; ceci à l'unanimité des toponymistes. Azov fut intégré dans la toponymie russe au XVII° siècle via la Chronique de Pimène et est directement lié au tatar de Crimée.

Plusieurs hypothèses existent concernant l'étymologie du mot Azov. Certaines hypothèses feraient dériver ce toponyme du nom d'un prince polovtsien Azum tué lors de la prise de la ville en 1067. D'autres du nom de la tribu des Os - que nous pourrons rapprocher des Asoki de Pline, qui proviendrait elle-même de l'avestique et signifierait rapide. Ce toponyme est également comparé au mot turc Azan - intérieur ou au mot circassien Uzev - cou. Ces hypothèses semblant peu fiables, nous pencherions plutôt pour un dérivé d'Asoki...
