C'est en 1685 que naît le village devenu ville. Il est nommé en l'honneur du Prince Алексей Михайлович Черкасский - Alexeï Mikhaïlovitch Cherkassky ; ce toponyme est donc un oïkonyme.

En 1685, Алексей - Alexeï n'a encore que 5 ans. Il deviendra gouverneur de Sibérie sous Pierre I° et fut toujours décrit comme homme tranquille, silencieux, discret et prudent dans toutes ses entreprises. Il fut l'un des plus grand propriétaire terrien de Russie et, sans oublier ses devoirs envers le Tsar et la couronne, œuvra au développement des terres qui lui furent confiées.
