L'immense majorité des toponymes de Aigues-Mortes datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Aigues-Mortes, en occitan Aigas Mòrtas, est attesté dès 1248, date à laquelle la commune apparaît dans les cartulaires de l'Abbaye de Psalmody sous sa forme latine Aquae Mortae. Ce toponyme signifie étangs, eaux mortes, non courantes et fait allusion aux étangs dont la ville est ceinturée.

Il est intéressant de signaler que les habitants d'Aigues-Mortes demandèrent à Saint Louis de nommer l'agglomération naissante du nom de eBona per Forsa - Bonne malgré le hasard. Le nom usuel Aigues-Mortes resta cependant en usage jusqu'à nos jours.
