⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

L'Abergement-Clémenciat est une commune née de la fusion en 1857 des paroisses de l'Abergement et de Clémenciat. C'est au XIII° siècle qu'est attestée la paroisse de l'Abergement sous son appellation latine Albergamentum in Dombis.

En Arpitan ancien, un Abergement était un territoire donné moyennant redevance annuelle par son suzerain à son vassal, paysan ou non. Ce mode de location à très long terme avait pour but de favoriser le défrichement des terres.
