Nous n'avons retrouvé date de formes toponymiques anciennes pour ce Zamyn-Üüd, en mongol Замын-Үүд qui signifie simplement Porte de la Route ; de Zam - chemin, route, ici au génitif, et de Uud - porte. La localisation de la ville, à la frontière franco-chinoise, explique la création de ce toponyme.

Le chemin de fer transmongol fut construit dans les années 1950 par des spécialistes soviétiques ; la main d'œuvre étant formée de soldats de l'Arméé Soviétique et de prisonniers condamnés à peine de travail.
