Nous sommes en 1905, Ilya Aleksiévitch Chatrov dirige l'orchestre du 214° Régiment d'Infanterie de Réserve de Mokchansky, district russe en région de Penza.

Encerclé par les nippons entre Moukden et Liaoyang, les munitions rares, cerné, le commandant du 214° - Colonel Piotr P. Pobyvanets, ordonne de charger en musique et baïonnette au canon ; musiciens jouant derrière l'étendard. Après féroces combats, le 214° brise les lignes japonaises mais laisse 3.300 hommes sur le terrain dont son commandant. 700 hommes survivront dont 7 musiciens ; parmi eux, Ilya A. Chatrov. Il composera cette valse peu après la guerre. Connaissant immédiat succès, elle est toujours chantée dans les réunions familiales ou amicales.

Septembre 1939, les japonais subiront une défaite décisive sur la rivière Khalkh ; ce fut la bataille du Khalkhiin Gol...
