◎ Oraison funèbre d'un cireur de bottes

L'endroit où depuis trente ans
par tous temps
le cireur cirait les bottes
est, par ce matin d'été,
déserté
de tous les gens que l'on décrotte.

Le fait est bref ; le voici
éclairci
des brumes du pédantisme:
le brave cireur est mort,
car trop fort
était le dol des rhumatismes.

Doucement, il s'est éteint,
un matin
que la boue était sereine,
presque liquide, ce qui fait,
en effet,
que le cireur n'eût pas de veine.

Il possédait un talent
excellent ;
dans son art, c'était un maître:
il donnait le reflet pur
de l'azur
aux godillots des gens de lettre.

Il cirait avec amour,
chaque jour,
au pied ombreux d'un platane ;
il retroussait les trop longs
pantalons,
ou le jupon, ou la soutane.

Oh! que d'oeuvres d'art tu fis,
sans profits
toi qui mirais dans la glace
des reflets purs étonnés
ton gros nez,
défunt décrotteur de la place.
