Saint-Jacques-en-Valgodemard, en vivaro-alpin Sant Jaume en Gaudemar, est attesté dans le Cartulaire de l'abbaye de Saint Chaffré situé sur la commune de Monastier-sur-Gazeille ; nous y retrouvons un Sanctus Jacobus en 1179 puis un Sanctus Jacobus de Valle Gaudemarii en 1390.

Multitudes de paroisses devenues communes ayant été rebaptisées lors de la Révolution de 1789, Saint-Jacques-en-Valgodemard va devenir la commune de Jacques Républicain le temps que les passions s'apaisent.
