Au soleil du midi j'ai vu les Pyrénées
Éterniser l'hiver dans leurs cirques neigeux,
Et les Alpes, d'argent lumineux couronnées,
De leurs dents de cristal mordre l'azur des cieux ;
Mais je t'ai mieux aimée en tes champs de bruyères,
Auvergne, avec tes puys aux lignes moins sévères
Et tes horizons faits pour le repos des yeux.

Je veux glorifier ton Sancy qu'à l'aurore
Enroulent en passant les nuages houleux,
Tes cascades, tes bois, tes donjons, ton Mont-Dore
Que juin tardif éveille en ses vallons frileux,
Tes hameaux qu'ont nommés des syllabes celtiques
Et, clos dans le contour des roches basaltiques,
Tes cratères muets où dorment les lacs bleus.

J'ai marché dans ta lave et dans tes pouzzolanes
Des vignes de Limagne aux forêts du Cantal,
J'ai vénéré tes saints dans les cryptes romanes,
J'ai mêlé d'humbles pas à ceux de ton Pascal ;
L'histoire glorieuse, où j'ai suivi ta trace,
Dans le coeur ferme et sûr des hommes de ta race
À mis comme un orgueil l'amour du lieu natal.

Ton peuple est fier encor de ses labeurs rustiques ;
Il sait confusément que ton sol enchanté
À jailli le premier des océans antiques
Et que le feu cruel a servi ta beauté ;
Et maintenant, parés de leurs grâces nouvelles,
Tes soixante volcans, comme autant de mamelles,
Symbolisent ta force et ta fécondité.

O terre, où chaque pli cache une cicatrice,
Où chaque mont fleuri parle des jours d'effroi,
Je suis venu vers toi comme à l'inspiratrice ;
Ce qui t'aime en mon âme est le meilleur de moi.
En retour, donne-moi l'oubli dont tu disposes
Par la vertu des lieux et l'exemple des choses :
Fais que mon coeur troublé s'apaise comme toi.
