⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Nous retrouvons trace de ce toponyme dès le XI° siècle avec un Cauuae puis, pour l'année 1100, avec un Chialvahe que nous retrouvons cité dans le Cartulaire de l'Abbaye de Redon. Les mêmes sources nous laisserons découvrir un Calvac et un Calvae en 1104 puis, sautant directement en 1287, un Chauvay qui est attesté Chauvé en 1815. Nous retrouvons ce toponyme sur les Cartes des Cassini avec sa graphie moderne.

Plusieurs hypothèses sont proposées pour ce toponyme dont une faisant dériver ce nom du gaulois avec un Calleva = bois. Étayant ce propos, nous retrouvons un Gallt = bois, falaise, colline utilisé en gallois et dont nous retrouvons forme proche en gaélique avec un Coill = bois.

L'éventualité faisant dériver ce toponyme du latin Calvus = chauve nous semble légère vue le nombre de personnes chauves...
