Le site carolingien de Château-Gaillard, idem en arpitan, est pour la première fois attesté dans les écrits sous les formes latines Decanus Castri Gaudiosi ou Castrum Galliardum au XIV° siècle ; c'est en effet le 10 décembre 1357 que le comte Vert de Savoie inféode justice et château-fort à Jean de Longecombe ; le document de 1385 nous signale un Joachinus de Claromonte, miles dominus Castri Gaillardi et Alte Ripes. Nous pouvons signaler ce lieu que nous trouvons nommé Château de Rémens en 1343 ; certainement erreur de copiste. En 1711, le lieu est nommé Chasteaugaillard et en l'an 1536, nous trouvons un Le fief de Chasteau gaillard, à cause de Saint Germain.

Le Castri = château ne pose difficultés ; quant au mot Galliardum = Gaillard = vaillance, hardiesse, courage, les étymologistes le pensent dériver du celtique Gall = force, vaillance, pouvoir que l'on retrouve toujours en breton avec le mot Galloud = Pouvoir.
