La Chapelle-Palluau, en poitevin La Chapéle-Palea, est attesté vers l'année 1302 lorsque Gautier de Bruges, Évêque de Poitiers, fit dresser un pouillé de son diocèse ; pouillé qui est section du cartulaire de l'Évêché.

Nous y retrouvons un de Capella prope Paludellum très significatif et rappelant l'existence de cette chapelle près des marais qui donnera son nom à la commune. Ce toponyme Palluau dérive du latin Palus - marais tojours utilisé en français, bien que rarement.

Où se situaient ces marais ?
Peut-être le long du Vie, fleuve vendéen passant dans la commune ou près des ces trois étangs situés dans une dépression semblant propice entre Douin et le bourg.
