Les forçats, malgré une vie terriblement éprouvante au bagne de Brest, chantaient bien volontiers le temps de leur soirées ou lors de certaisn travaux éprouvants.

La chaîne,
Ça nous gêne;
Mais c'est égal,
Ça n'fait pas de mal.

Nos habits sont écarlates,
Nous portons au lieu d'chapeaux
Des bonnets et point d'cravates,
Ça fait brosse pour les jabots.
Nous aurions tort de nous plaindre,
Nous sommes des enfants gâtés,
Et c'est crainte de nous perdre

Nous f'rons de belles ouvrages
En paille ainsi qu'en cocos,
Dont nous f'rons étalage
Sans qu'nos boutiques pay' d'impôts.
Ceux qui visitent le bagne
N' sen vont jamais sans acheter,
Avec ce produit d'aubaine
Nous nous arrosons l'gosier.

Quand vient l'heur' de s'bourrer l'ventret,
En avant les haricots !
Ça n'est pas bon mais ça entre
Tout comm' le meilleur fricot.
Not' guignon eût été pire,
Si, comm' de jolis cadets,
On nous eu fait raccourcir
À l'abbaye d'mont-à-r'gret.

NDR: Bien qu'écrit Abbaye de Monte à Regret - ce qui s'expliquerait par le manque de gaîté de cœur à gravir les marches, l'expression correcte semble être Abbaye de Monte à r'grets. Avant de se voir passer la cravate de chanvre, le condamné à mort montait les marches de la potence à reculons, à R'grets
