L'année 1365 nous laisse découvrir un Chagnay que nous retrouvons en l'an 1400 puis 1461 sous la forme Chaney puis Chanay ; tous les deux dans les archives de la Côte d'Or. Guichenon, dans son ouvrage sur la Bresse et le Bugey, nous attera deus formes toponymiques anciennes avec une Communauté de Chanay du Mandement de Seyssel en 1536 puis un Chanay en Michaille, près de Dorches pour l'année 1650. La première mention écrite connue de ce toponyme se lit en 1198 avec un Ecclesia de Chaney, liée à l'Archiprêté de Champfromier.

Ce toponyme dériverait du gaulois Cassanos en passant par l'ancien français Chasne.

En arpitan, le mot Chanêre désigne une chênaie et est utilisé en parallèle avec les mots Tronchayê ou Tronshayâ suivant le terroir.
