■ Chabestan: Le Monument aux Morts

Le Monument aux Morts de Chabestan est élevé dans la partie moderne du cimetière communal, face à l'entrée.

Récent - il a été édifié peut avant le centenaire du premier conflit mondial, il se présente comme un sobre marbre noir comportant 13 noms pour 1914-1918 et un pour 1939-1945. Le marbre est fixé sur une stèle réalisée à partir des galets du Buëch tout proche.

C'est un monument de grande sobriété, comme la mort, le respect et souvenir que nous devons à ces hommes.

Les Monuments aux Morts rappellent les soldats morts pour le pays lors des derniers conflits. C'est la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870-1871 qui verront apparaître les premiers Monuments aux Morts du pays.

Toutes les communes de France ou presque voient leur monument édifié après la guerre de 1914-1918. L'épitaphe la plus courante est Morts pour la France sauf l'Alsace-Lorraine qui grave un Morts à la Guerre bien compréhensif.

Les Monuments aux Morts sont souvent oubliés lors de nos visites ; pourtant ils sont tranche d'Histoire importante et douloureux rappel des folies humaines.

Par cette page, nous tentons de redonner existence à ces hommes et lutter contre ces vents de l'oubli qui les efface.
