◎ Sonnet au Pelvoux

Roi des Alpes, géant Pelvoux,
Au front couronné de nuages,
Les monts et leurs rîmes sauvages,
À tes pieds rampent à genoux.

Dès l'origine jusqu'à nous,
Tantôt illustrés par les sages,
Tantôt avilis par les fous,
Tu vois se succéder les âges.

Ton ombre abrita mon berceau ;
Qu'avant de couvrir mon tombeau,
Elle inspire mes promenades.

En vedette, sur ton sommet,
Ma Muse, aujourd'hui, se permet
De chanter avec tes cascades.

Les horizons les plus lointains
S'offrent partout à ma lunette,
Si, peintre, j'avais la palette,
Quels tableaux sublimes, divins !....

Inconnu parmi les humains,
Berger, je n'eus que la musette,
Soldat aujourd'hui, dans mes mains,
Pourquoi la fronde ou la trompette ?...

Loin du Pelvoux, comme à l'entour,
On dirait enfui sans retour
Le bon sens de l'espèce humaine :

De nos héros tel est le ton,
Que seul convient le mirliton
À leur gloire républicaine.
