Bettant s'écrivait encore Bettans en 1880 puis s'est normalisé sous sa forme actuelle.

C'est dans les archives de la Côte-d'Or que nous retrouvons ce toponyme en 1344 sous la forme Betans suivi d'un Bettans en 1385. Ces mêmes archives nous dévoileront un Betan au XVIII° siècle ; ceci rappelant que le -s final est muet. Les Mémoires d'Aubret nous signalent le Betan du XVIII° siècle et les annales du département nous offrent un Bettan en 1850 suivi d'un Bettant en 1876 et même documentation.

Ce toponyme semble dériver du burgonde avec un ancien anthroponyme Betingos dérivant d'un Beto.
