Balaruc, en occitan Balaruc, qu'il soit Balaruc-le-Vieux - Balaruc Vièlh, ou Balaruc-les-Bains - Los Banhs de Balaruc, est attesté en 961 sou la forme Balarug.

Ce toponyme subit plusieurs altérations comme Balazuc ou Baladuc, avant de se fixer sous sa forme actuelle. Balaruc, pour Ernest nègre, dériveraient probablement du latin Vada Luci - gués dans les bois.

Le 11 décembre 1886, Balaruc est scindé en deux communes: Balaruc-le-Vieux et Balaruc-les-Bains étaient nées...
