Bâgé-le-Châtel se retrouve dans le cartulaire de l'Abbaye de Mâcon entre les années 1018-1030 sous les formes latines Balbiacus et villa baugiaci castri en 1250.

Comme beaucoup de toponymes de la région, Bâgé-le-Châtel doit son appellation à une villa gallo-romaine dont le propriétaire devait être un certain Balgiacus qui au fil des siècles deviendra ce Bâgé que nous connaissons maintenant.

La composition du toponyme avec un Le Châtel permet de différencier cette commune de Bâgé-la-Ville et rappelle l'existence de ce château qui a marqué le territoire.
