Nous retrouvons Arlod sous les anciennes formes de Arlos, Arloudus, ante Arlo, Arloz dont en l'an 1198 quand l'Archevêque de Lyon, Renaud de Forez, confirme la collation de cette paroisse au monastère de Nantua.

Ce toponyme dériverait du prénom burgonde Arlold ou Erlold, anthroponyme lié à l'ancien nordique Erl - Homme et confirmé par un Villarlod, ancienne commune suisse que nous retrouvons dans le District de la Sarine.
