L'immense majorité des toponymes de Aiguèze datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Nous retrouvons ce toponyme dans une charte datée de l'an 1196 avec un Aigueda ; il est confirmé en 1384 avec ce Ayguedo significatif puis Locus Ayguedinis en 1461 ; ce suffixe -dine, -dinus, - dines se verra sur multiples documents et nous rappelle certainement le château existant, alors peut-être motte féodale.

C'est en 1555 que ce suffixe disparaît et c'est un couvent d'Ursulines qui nous laisse découvrir un Denys d'Aiguèze, seigneur du lieu.

Ce toponyme est formé du mot occitan Aiga - eau et du suffixe Ayse, aisze, etc.... Le suffixe nous impose une recherche en occitan médiéval: nous y retrouvons le mot Ayse et ses variantes orthographiques ayant sens de demeure, domicile, maison..., notamment dans une chanson de Bertrand de Born, fils - 1140-1215: Un sirventes voil obrar. Cette signification expliquerait de même la bascule entre Locus Ayguedinis et Aiguèze. Ce changement toponymique serait-il lié à la construction d'une demeure plus confortable que le château d'origine ?
L'hypothèse n'est pas à exclure.
