■ Abriès-Ristolas: Kaol an Oriant (Chou de Lorient)

Le Kaol an Oriant - Choux de Lorient est né un peu avant 1890 dans la famille Le Bellec-Mentec d'une sélection de choux de Milan.

Collectant sur Keryado, un ancien - Doue d'e fardonno, nous raconta que Pierre-Marie Le Bellec et son beau-père, Le Mentec, achetèrent un lot de semence sensées être des graines de chou-vache, autre nom du chou fourrager ; leur surprise fut grande de découvrir que ces choux étaient de type Chou de Milan.

Bien vite ils sélectionnèrent un cultivar qui, résistant aux gelées, de bonne saveur et conservation, était parfait pour avitailler la Royale.

Une amie de toujours de Pierre-Marie travaillant aux Halles de Paris ouvrira le marché parisien puis le marché allemand ; la grande aventure du chou de Lorient démarrait...

Ce chou est une variété tardive ; elle résiste bien aux froids et gels. Cette variété de choux fut l'objet d'une culture très importante en région de Lorient. Ce chou, de superbe qualité étant parfait pour la choucroute, ils furent exportés vers l'Est de la France et en Allemagne par trains entiers au moment des récoltes. Ce cultivar est parfait pour réaliser une choucroute.
