Aboncourt est attesté dès 800-813 sous la forme latine Aboniscurtis - Villa cui Aboniscurtis nommen est. Il s'agit ici de la ferme d'un certain Abon, Abbon ; sans doute un colon germain qui, au moment où l'Empire Romain se lézardait, put s'y établir et fut doté de terres. Moyennant cette propriété, ces avantages et ces droits, il s'engageait à défendre les frontières impériales ; nous retrouvons cette logique chez les Cosaques qui, en échange de certaines libertés, furent des piliers de l'Empire russe.

Il s'agit donc à l'origine de la ferme de cet Abdon.

La commune était autrefois attachée au département des Vosges.
