Abbéville-la-Rivière était connue sous l'appellation Abbéville jusqu'en 1901, date à laquelle la commune se vit ajouter un -la-rivière pour le différencer des autres Abbéville du pays.

Abbéville-la-Rivière, comme toutes les communes de France, est née en 1793 mais n'a pas laissé de traces antérieures apparentes.
